The Resignation Machine: How One Slack Message Became a 160-Million-View Extinction Scare
A four-month Anthropic researcher, a dead X account, and a pre-built warning network turned one resignation into the most viral AI safety event of the decade. This is the anatomy of a launch — fact-checked, triangulated, and reconstructed move by move.
The Thesis
The popular story is: a brave researcher quit and went viral. The reconstructed story is: a resignation was launched — sequenced through a prestige paper, a dormant social account, a professional amplification network, a corroborating insider, and a media calendar that was already booked to say the same thing.
This report does not claim anyone was paid to quit, that the posts were ghostwritten, or that the resignation was insincere. It claims the infrastructure that amplified it was pre-built, and that the sequence was not accidental. Every claim below is labeled Confirmed, Unverified, or Interpretive, with sourcing.

Phase 01 · The Resignation
September 8, 2026 — A Slack Message in San Francisco
On the afternoon of September 8, 2026, Jacob Coxon told Anthropic he was done. He did it in Slack — the way people quit a job. He was 27. He had been at the company about four months. He worked on pretraining: the unglamorous first stage where a model is force-fed the internet until it can predict what comes next. He had done the same work at OpenAI. He left Anthropic before his stock vested. He still holds OpenAI equity. He was not fired.
If the story had stopped there, almost no one would know his name. It did not stop there.
Coxon identity, credentials, and employment history are verifiable through public records

Phase 02 · The Newspaper
The Wall Street Journal — 30 Minutes Later
Thirty minutes after the Slack resignation, the Wall Street Journal published an exclusive. The byline was Amrith Ramkumar, a Washington reporter who covers tech and policy — not lifestyle. Coxon told the paper that people inside the labs now talk in the language of endings — "crunch time," "endgame" — and that under the aggressive timelines, control could slip by the end of next year. He compared the work to a Manhattan Project being run from MacBooks in San Francisco.
The Sequencing Problem
"We're on track for a lot of the most aggressive of these scenarios where by the end of next year things could be out of control already."
— Jacob Coxon, Wall Street Journal, September 8, 2026
The WSJ exclusive was published before the X thread, not after

Phase 03 · The Ghost Account
The Park Bench — @hilbertspaess Goes Live
Seven to eighteen minutes after the Journal story went live — the public clocks disagree by a sliver — Coxon sat on a park bench in San Francisco and opened an X account that almost nobody followed. @hilbertspaess had been created in January 2026. He later said the resignation thread was basically his first public post. Reporters hunting for a LinkedIn came back empty.
The first of seven posts was four sentences:
1.He resigned from Anthropic that day.
2.He had spent three years on pretraining at OpenAI and Anthropic.
3.Neither company was acting responsibly.
4.They were racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.
The posts that followed did the work television would soon do for him. Do not underestimate what is coming. These systems will hack, invent, and gather power. The people building them earnestly believe the technology could kill everyone by the end of the decade. That is not a marketing stunt. Executives sand it down for cameras. The same people sound frightened in private. OpenAI has not fully internalized the stakes. Anthropic has — and is racing anyway, because it does not trust anyone else to be careful. Starting that "endgame" from a company Slack is a hubristic gamble. The country might need pacing deals between labs, or even a temporary ban on making models stronger.
The first post crossed 100 million views, then more — unprecedented for a new account

The Obvious Question
Phase 04 · The Amplification Network
The Chat — Who Was Waiting
Coxon told the Post he did not hire a communications firm. He also told the Post what he did instead.
He talked to Daniel Kokotajlo before he posted. Kokotajlo is not a civilian — he left OpenAI, runs the AI Futures Project, and wrote AI 2027, the forecast that turned "recursive self-improvement" into a household nightmare in this subculture. After the thread went up, Coxon messaged a group chat of about ten people and asked them to share it. The founder of Encode — an advocacy shop that exists to turn AI risk into law — was in that chat. Encode founder is Sneha Revanur. The Journal later reported that Coxon turned to his friend Nathan Calvin, Encode general counsel, for help announcing.
The Launch Team, In His Own Telling
The first fifteen minutes on X look like that list. Parker Thayer, an investigator at the Capital Research Center, timed the first quote-tweets. Inside a quarter hour:
Quote-tweet 1
Nathan Calvin
Encode, General Counsel
Helped Coxon announce, per WSJ. Encode exists to turn AI risk into law.
Quote-tweet 2
Peter Wildeford
AI Policy Network
Policy advocacy; early amplifier of the thread.
Quote-tweet 3
Daniel Kokotajlo
AI Futures Project
Author of AI 2027. Briefed before the post. On Joe Rogan the next day.
Close behind
Coefficient Giving program officer
Moskovitz philanthropy stack
Funder of AI safety work; followed the thread within minutes.
Three Policy Organizations. One Dead Account. Fifteen Minutes.
That is not weather. That is a chat doing what a chat is for.
The Funding Behind the Amplifiers
The money around the amplifiers is also on paper. None of it proves someone paid Coxon to quit. It proves the warning world can move a story in an hour, because moving that story is the job.
| Funder | Recipient | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Jaan Tallinn — Survival and Flourishing Fund | Encode, AI Futures Project, related groups | Millions in grants; Tallinn is also an early Anthropic investor |
| Dustin Moskovitz & Cari Tuna — philanthropy | Coxon 2022 scholarship; Coefficient Giving | Funded Coxon directly before his lab career; funds the amplification ecosystem |
| Long-Term Future Fund (Good Ventures vehicle) | Coxon personally (~$20K, 2022) | Direct financial support to the future resigner before he entered the labs |
| Encode stated policy | No frontier-lab executive funding | Still draws from the same safety-philanthropy well that sits next to the labs |
The amplification network was pre-existing, not assembled on the spot

Phase 05 · The Insider
Evan Hubinger — The Corroborating Insider
Then a person who still had a badge at Anthropic did the one thing a resignation thread cannot do for itself.
Evan Hubinger leads alignment science there — the team whose job is to keep systems from going off the rails. He replied in public:
"Jacob is correct here — we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to."
— Evan Hubinger, Anthropic Alignment Science Lead, on X, September 8, 2026
Why This Reply Changed Everything
After that sentence, bookers no longer had to decide whether a four-month employee was having a feeling. They had a current senior safety researcher agreeing on the same thread — someone who still worked at the company Coxon had just left, confirming the threat was real and the lab had no plan.
That is the accelerant. A resignation thread is one person opinion. A senior insider public corroboration is a news event.
Hubinger reply was public, on the same thread, from a current Anthropic employee

Phase 06 · The Media Circuit
Television — The Seven Posts Become the Script
That night and the next day the circuit opened. Anderson Cooper. Bret Baier. CBS. WIRED. Axios. Cooper first question was the tweet, spoken slowly: you mean that literally? How does everyone die?
There is no public CNN script with his name on it. There did not need to be. The seven posts were the script. Television asked him to say them at speaking speed.
Coxon threat model was not new — it was the Hugging Face breach scaled up

Phase 07 · The Calendar
The Calendar Was Not Empty
The calendar around him was not empty. The resignation did not create the media week. It dropped into one.
Sep 8, 2026

~30 minutes later, @hilbertspaess posts the seven-part thread from a park bench.

Sep 9, 2026
Joe Rogan Experience #2551 released — guest: Daniel Kokotajlo
Subject: autonomous agents, deception, and maybe they kill everyone. Rogan bookings are not walk-ons. That episode was on the books before Coxon posted.
~Sep 2, 2026
Sanders-Casar bill to ban artificial superintelligence introduced
A week before the thread. After the thread, they pointed at Coxon. He did not draft the bill. The bill needed a face. He became the face.
Sep 10, 2026
Coxon and Kokotajlo walk in Berkeley
Per the Journal: Kokotajlo told him the message had landed. Turn down more cameras. Sleep. So many people inside those companies could have done this. He was the one who did.
The Media Week Was Pre-Booked
The Rogan episode with Kokotajlo was released September 9 — the same news day as the thread, once you cross time zones. Rogan bookings are scheduled weeks or months in advance. The Sanders-Casar bill was introduced a week earlier.
The resignation did not create the media week. It dropped into one that was already built to say the same thing.
The Shape Is a Checklist
Strip away the names and the drama, and the sequence reduces to a repeatable playbook. Every step is a move that made the next move possible.
Quit inside the company.
Slack, not a press release. Makes you a real person, not a PR stunt.
Let a prestige paper stamp that you are real.
WSJ exclusive, pre-arranged. The paper says: this person exists and matters.
Post the scare lines minutes later from an account with no past.
@hilbertspaess, created January 2026, basically no history. The emptiness is the point — it makes the virality look organic.
Text the people whose job is the megaphone.
A group chat of ~10 people: Encode, AI Futures Project, AI Policy Network. The first quote-tweets were that world.
Hope someone still inside says you are right.
Hubinger, Anthropic alignment lead, replies publicly. A resignation becomes a two-person event with institutional weight.
Let television ask you to repeat yourself.
Anderson Cooper, Bret Baier, CBS, WIRED, Axios. The seven posts are the script. They ask you to say them at speaking speed.
Let a bill that was already printed borrow your face.
Sanders-Casar, introduced a week earlier. The bill needed a face. He became the face.
Land on a week a friend is already booked to say the same nightmare on the biggest podcast in the country.
Rogan #2551 with Kokotajlo, released September 9. Same message, same week, same network.
What Is Solid, and What Is Not
What Holds Up
- He is real. The contest site, the papers, and the people who recruited him are real.
- He resigned. The Slack message happened.
- Hubinger agreed in public — on the same thread, same day.
- The Journal published first — before the X thread, not after.
- He asked a small professional chat to boost the post.
- The first quote-tweets were that world — Encode, AI Futures, AI Policy Network.
- Rogan already had Kokotajlo that week — episode #2551 was pre-booked.
- The Sanders-Casar bill already existed — introduced a week earlier.
What Is Not Solid
- That a party built him — no evidence of a coordinated construction effort.
- That Encode typed the seven posts — Coxon says he wrote them.
- That CNN handed him a teleprompter — no script with his name exists.
- That Tallinn or Moskovitz ordered the resignation — funding proximity is not causation.
- The other names in the chat of ten — not publicly identified.
- The exact minute he first emailed the Journal — not publicly known.
What the Missing Pages Would and Wouldn't Change
Those missing pages would make the file sharper. They are not required to see the shape. The shape is: a resignation, sequenced through pre-existing infrastructure, amplified by a pre-funded network, corroborated by a sitting insider, dropped into a pre-booked media week.
Even if every missing page turned out to be innocent — if the chat was just friends, if the timing was luck, if Hubinger just happened to be online — the infrastructure still did what it was built to do. The question is not whether anyone orchestrated it. The question is whether the result would have been any different if they had.
The Fingerprint
The firework
The tweet — seven posts from a dead account.
The match
The Journal — a prestige paper stamping that the person is real.
The fuse
The chat — ten people whose job is the megaphone, texted before the post went up.
The accelerant
Hubinger — a sitting Anthropic alignment lead confirming the threat publicly.
The stadium
Television — Cooper, Baier, CBS, WIRED, Axios, all asking him to repeat the seven posts.
The calendar
Rogan #2551 with Kokotajlo, already booked. Sanders-Casar, already printed.
The Eighteen Minutes
Eighteen minutes separate the newspaper from the park bench. That gap is the fingerprint. It is the distance between a story that happened to someone and a story that someone made happen.
That is not a ghost story. It is a launch.

This report reconstructs a sequence of publicly reported events, public social media posts, and on-record statements available as of September 17, 2026. The "amplification machine" framing is this report interpretive analysis of the sequence and its surrounding infrastructure; it is not a claim of orchestration, payment, or bad faith on the part of any individual or organization named. Where this report characterizes a claim as Confirmed, it is independently verifiable through the cited sources. Where it is labeled Interpretive, it represents this report synthesis of the available evidence. Coxon resignation and his safety concerns are presented as sincerely held; the analysis addresses the infrastructure that amplified them, not the sincerity of the person.

These questions don't have consensus answers. Share one to LinkedIn or X and see what your network actually thinks.
"A four-month employee resigns via Slack, and 30 minutes later the Wall Street Journal has an exclusive. 18 minutes after that, a ghost X account with no history posts a seven-part thread that hits 160 million views. Is this how a sincere warning spreads — or how a pre-built machine launches one?"
"Evan Hubinger, Anthropic's sitting alignment lead, replied on the same thread: 'we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans,' >10% this decade, and the company has no plan for aligning superintelligence. Does a senior insider publicly confirming the threat make the danger more real — or just the story better?"
"The first quote-tweets came from Encode, the AI Futures Project, and the AI Policy Network — all funded by the same philanthropy ecosystem that funded Coxon's own pre-lab career. The Rogan episode with Kokotajlo was already booked. The Sanders-Casar bill was already printed. At what point does 'organic virality' become 'a network doing what it was built to do'?"
